Mark Doyle used to perform at the Waterworks Restaurant during his days as a stand-up comic. He’s still trying to make local audiences laugh, but as a businessman interested in expanding the reach of his Hyena’s Comedy Nightclub in Arlington.

Doyle is considering expanding Hyena’s to College Station and Albuquerque, N.M., and is hoping to get a stand-up toehold in Waco by establishing a “Comedy Tour Live" night.

“There are so many good comics in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and Waco areas that we’re able to bring in much higher caliber talent,” he said.

The comedy night, held every other Saturday at the hotel, features almost two hours of stand-up: short sets by openers, a feature act of about 30 minutes and then nearly an hour set by the night’s headliner.

The variety packaged within the evening makes it more likely that audiences will find something funny — the reason why they attend. “Comedy is one of the best ways for people to forget their problems,” Doyle said. “They don’t come for the chicken wings.”

The comedy club promoter has brought such popular Dallas and Austin performers as J.R. Brow, Cowboy Bill Martin, Jason Russell and Cesar Cervantes to Waco as well as younger ones eager for the experience. “Stage time is valuable to a comic. It’s the only way to hone your skills,” Doyle explained.

Doyle has had to scale back his plan to offer stand-up on a weekly basis, opting for a comedy night every two weeks at the Waco hotel. Audiences have grown to an average of 100 to 125 for each night, with returning customers making up about a third of that number

He’s hopeful he can expand what he brings to here, but only if there’s sufficient support. “That’s what the people of Waco have to decide,” he said.
